Green Leaf

Broekhof is developing a sustainable packaging range with the ‘Green Leaf’ label. The environmental impact of the production of this packaging is minimal. It’s now possible to manufacture packaging using elephant grass, Paperwise, PLA or a combination of these materials. For more information about potential uses, availability and prices, please contact your personal sales representative or email us at info@broekhof.nl.

From elephant grass to ornamental pot?

Image titleThe name elephant grass, suggests that it might be eaten by elephants. Far from it, in fact this grass, which grows up to 4 metres high, is grown here in the Netherlands. Cultivation began as a wildlife-friendly solution to counter goose problems around the runways at Schiphol Airport. The products made from Elephant grass have a low carbon footprint and high technical performance. They include wood-free paper, petrochemical-free plastic and even concrete.

You can choose from ornamental pots and labels all made from elephant grass. Although the ornamental pots are only available in their natural colour, the premium-quality paper and carton are perfect for full-colour printing and offers many possibilities.

Why does elephant grass have less impact on the environment?
Elephant grass:

  • is 100% industrial compostable.*
  • absorbs four times as much CO2 as a forest.
  • is produced in the Netherlands, reducing product miles.
  • purifies the air, capturing fine particles and providing noise reduction.
* Compostable means that the packaging can be deposited in the biodegradable refuse bin.

Certification:
Certification of elephant grass as a raw material has been applied for under number EN13432, Vincotte OK Compost and Vincotte OK Bio Based.

Paperwise: from Agri waste to pot cover?

Image titleTo feed seven billion people every day, farmers grow crops such as rice, grain and sugar cane. The processing of these crops releases plant stems and leaves known as Agri waste, amounting to billions of tons globally. Agri waste is the raw material for high-grade paper and carton with the name Paperwise. Paperwise is a breakthrough in sustainability, offering untold possibilities and excellent quality.

We can offer you pot covers, luxurious gift bags, bouquet vases and tubing. The plain white paper is suitable for all types of ink and is especially suited to full-colour printing.

Why does Paperwise have less impact on the environment?
Paperwise:

  • is 100% industrial compostable.*
  • reduces environmental impact by 47%, compared to FSC paper made from wood pulp and by 29% compared to recycled paper. It offers a meaningful application for Agri waste.
  • is produced using 100% green energy.
* Compostable means that the packaging can be deposited in the biodegradable refuse bin.

Certification:
As a raw material, Paperwise is certified under number EN13432, Vincotte OK Compost and Vincotte OK Bio Based.

From renewable raw materials to flower sleeves?

Image titlePLA (‘Polylactic Acid or Polylactide’ is a biopolymer. Although the name sounds rather ‘chemical’, nothing could be further from the truth. PLA is one of the best known and most sustainable bioplastics. Unlike traditional plastics, PLA is made from renewable raw materials and not from fossil fuels. The Agri waste and biomass used is a bi-product of sugar cane and corn, not at the expense of food. PLA can be machine processed in various ways, which means that it can be used for many packaging applications. It is now possible to make flower sleeves from renewable raw materials.

We can produce flower and plant sleeves, rolls of film, tubing and bags for flower food, pot covers and labels from PLA. PLA offers the same printing possibilities as a traditionally produced film.

Why does PLA have less impact on the environment?
PLA:

  • is 100% industrial compostable.*
  • offers a meaningful application for Agri waste using renewable raw materials.
  • reduces carbon emissions, when compared to fossil fuels.
* Compostable means that the packaging can be deposited in the biodegradable refuse bin.

Certification:
As a raw material, PLA is certified under number EN13432, Vincotte OK Compost and Vincotte OK Bio Based. View the certificate.
